Summer Training

There are two summer training requirements that are mandatory:

  • Cadet Basic Camp (BC) is open to all Cadets between the summer of their sophomore and junior year, Cadets requiring to complete any portion of the Basic Courses (MLSC 101, 102, 201 and/or 202) will also attend this training.
  • Cadet Advanced Camp (AC) for all Cadets between the summer of their junior and senior years.

All other summer training listed below are opportunities to allow Cadets to see what the Army is all about, help them gain experiences and knowledge before becoming officers and to help them test their own limits.

Basic Camp

Basic Camp is a four-week course with four phases (Soldier First Phase, Warrior Leader Phase, Bold Leader Phase, Future Leader Phase) of Army training both inside a classroom and in the field at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Cadets can attend this training between the summer of their freshman and junior year. Cadets can earn college credit for this course as an elective by enrolling in MLSC 206, Basic Summer Camp.

Advanced Camp

Advanced Camp is 38-day course with multiple components. It is required for commissioning and Cadets attend this training between the summer of their junior and senior year (except for nursing students who often go between their sophomore and junior years). The purpose of this training is for Cadets to be evaluated on their abilities to lead others and for their critical thinking.  Cadets can earn college credit for this course as an elective by enrolling in MLSC 303, Advanced Summer Camp. This is a required class for the minor in Military Science.

CTLT (Cadet Troop  Leader Training)

Upon selection, Cadets are placed in Active-duty units for up to four-weeks where they get an opportunity to shadow a lieutenant and serve as the acting platoon leader. They are given a mentor to guide them. The units are both in CONUS (Continental United States) and OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States), including places like Alaska, Hawaii, Korea, Germany and Italy.

Internships

Internships provide Cadets with an opportunity to exercise specialized language, technical or research skills. Internships range from three to eight weeks long and are often a very unique supplement to their education at ULL.

NTSP (Nurse Summer Training Program)

This program is available to nursing students and is generally completed in the summer between their junior and senior years. Nursing Cadets have an opportunity to be posted at a hospital that serves military Soldiers and their Families. Much like the CTLT program above, this program is focused on nurse only and giving them an appreciation and understanding of what our nurses do every day. Currently, the ROTC Department is working with the College of Nursing to see if there is an opportunity to offer this as a course through UL.

Additional Training

Cadets can compete for additional training during the summer.

  • Air Assault: The purpose is to train Soldiers in Air Assault operations, sling-load operations, and rappelling.  Upon graduation of the course, each Soldier will be able to perform skills required to make maximum use of helicopter assets in training and in combat to support their unit operations Upon graduation, Cadets are awarded the US Army Air Assault Badge. for more information, visit the US Army Air Assault School page.
  • Airborne Training: Cadets learn the skills necessary to become paratroopers. A three-week long course, this course is mentally and physically demanding. Upon graduation, Cadets are awarded the US Army Basic Parachutist Badge. For more information, visit the US Army Airborne School page.
  • Army Mountain Warfare School (AMWS): Cadets learn tactical and technical training for mountain warfare and cold weather operations during a 14-day course. AMWS courses enable Cadets to operate successfully using proven techniques derived from lessons learned by units currently engaged in mountain warfare. AMWS is located in the mountains of Jericho, Vermont at Camp Ethan Allen Training Site (CEATS). Graduates of the Basic Military Mountaineer Course (BMMC) earn the Special Qualification Identifier for "Military Mountaineer." For more information, visit the US Army Mountain Warfare School page.
